Paramount - 1962: Crumley Cogwheel (I'll Raise You Ten) Treatment

Earlier today I was wondering what next to post, when I happened to surf over to Cartoon Brew and saw that Jerry had posted Paramount's Crumley Cogwheel (HERE). Thanks Jerry. So, this one's a no-brainer. I think this is kind of interesting, because it's an early treatment my father did and is somewhat different than the finished cartoon: the working title is "I'll Raise You Ten", the liquid lunch gag ends differently, my father gives a few other gag ideas that didn't make it into the film, and also, he wrote the ending totally different! I wish I had a later version of the treatment (maybe I'll find one) to see if he wrote the changes himself. Enjoy.

Your dad's original outline features a better, more satisfying ending. The 'one dollar' resolution in the finished cartoon flies in the face of what the boss said earlier about offering Crumley any amount he wants. Hard to know at this point who changed it or why.

You know, I was actually thinking last night after watching the cartoon over on the Brew that having the boss lose his job would have made for a more satisfying ending (similar to the way the landlord tosses Elmer out of his house just as he's about to toss Sylvester out in "Kit for Cat"). Glad to see that was the original thought here by your dad, and that it was changed to the less-funny ending between script and production.

Your dad used to type on looseleaf? That's so cool.

My dad was freelancing for the studio at this point. My guess is he ran out of "typing paper" (no 24-hour convenience stores in those days) and just grabbed the looseleaf from either myself or my sister. When the muse hits...
